The term "Tartan track" has been known as a synonym for synthetic athletic tracks since right after the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. Because the "Tartan" brand name, then owned by 3 M Company, became famous on a world-wide basis during the 1970's, "Tartan" has become a generic name for synthetic all-weather athletic track surfaces of all makes. BSW has obtained the rights for the trade name "Regupol tartan®" since 2009. In the US synthetic running tracks are being sold under the name "Tartan" by a company called APS. "Tartan tracks" generally consist of polyurethane binders and rubber but their physical properties can vary considerably from manufacturer to manufacturer.
